Beach of the Day: Jolly Hall, Great Exuma, The Bahamas

By: Alexander Britell - April 10, 2025 - 3:28 pm

What is it about the beach that moves us? The sound? The lap of the waves? That mystical nexus of turquoise and white? Caribean beaches call to us, and to all travelers. They remain the region’s great siren song, drawing us in, occupying a privileged space in our afternoon daydreams.

That’s why we’ve launched our newest regular column: Beach of the Day, which will take you on a regular journey to our favorite stretches of sand across the Caribbean.

The emphasis will be on beaches that are a bit further off the beaten path, with the hope that we can help you discover some under-the-radar gems to add to your own travel collection. Of course, we will also be highlighting legendary beaches that you all know and love. In other words, there will be an ebb and flow.

So where are we starting? Jolly Hall Beach.

Set on the “mainland” of Great Exuma, this is a lovely crescent just across the water from Stocking Island (which has some spectacular beaches and beach bars of its own, mind you).

It’s just a short drive on Queen’s Highway on the outskirts of George Town, and, like just about every beach on Great Exuma, it’s deliciously uncrowded. There are no beach bars, no restaurants, just a picture-perfect coastline made for days on the sand and bobbing around the ocean.

The sand is almost blindingly white and the water, well, if you’ve been to Exuma, you know it’s that electric, brilliant, Windex-level shade of aquamarine that’s almost otherworldly.

Where should we feature next? Let us know at news@caribjournal.com.
