Hurricane Beryl: Jamaica, Cayman Islands Escape Major Impact

Two islands in the crosshairs of Hurricane Beryl appear to have escaped major damage in the storm, according to local reports.

Jamaica has discontinued its Hurricane Warning, with reports of some damage on the very southern tip of the island.

The storm traveled south of the island, causing some damage to a small section of the roof at Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport.

The island’s tourism industry is centered in destinations like Montego Bay and Ocho Rios on the north coast of the island, which were not impacted by the storm.

In Jamaica, government offices were expected to resume normal operations by Thursday afternoon.

In the Cayman Islands, Grand Cayman saw strong waves from the somewhat-weakened 120 mph hurricane.

It appears that the storm was just far south enough to spare the islands from significant impact.

Right now, Beryl is about 50 miles south of Grand Cayman, with a hurricane watch in effect for the Mexican Caribbean.

The storm initially entered the Caribbean through the Grenadines, causing devastation to Union Island in the Grenadines and the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique in Grenada. Grenada itself escaped significant damage.
