The Ultimate Island-Hopping Vacation in The Bahamas

The Moorings has bases in Abaco and Exuma.

Island-hopping across places like Green Turtle Cay and Great Guana in The Abacos. Taking your dinghy to pristine sandbars and islands with swimming pigs in the Exumas. Journeying through history in Hope Town. The undersea coves of Manjack Cay. A cocktail at Pete’s Pub.

If you like island hopping, The Bahamas is for you. And two places in particular: Abaco and Exuma, a pair of archipelagos each with its own distinct charms and small-island wonders.

In Abaco, you can set out from Great Abaco (an easy flight from the mainland US) and venture out to postcard-perfect little islands and cays, from the beloved Green Turtle Cay (make sure you stop for a Tranquil Turtle Rum Punch at the Bluff House) to the legendary Nippers.

The water is unlike anything you’ve seen.

In Exuma, it’s all about that Windex blue, where you can move right up and down the Exuma chain, stopping for picnics on deserted sandbars and uninhabited little cays, swim with the famous pigs, or make the pilgrimage to the Staniel Cay Yacht Club.

But if you’re looking to island hop in The Bahamas, one option towers above the rest: a power catamaran charter with The Moorings, the region’s top yacht charter firm.

With bases in both Great Exuma and Marsh Harbour, the company has cultivated the best way to explore these two island-heavy destinations.

The Bluff House on Green Turtle Cay is an essential stop on any Abaco charter trip.

And a power cat is the way to do it. Depending on your group size, you can travel with up to 12 people in a high-tech, fast vessel that has become the most popular thing in the yacht charter industry.

While sailboats are great, the comfort and ease of a power cat is hard to match, whether you’re doing it bareboat or upping the luxury and going for a fully skippered and crewed all-inclusive yacht vacation.

Or you can just hire a skipper, letting him or her do the navigation and leaving the rest of the vacation to you.

Those impromptu snorkeling outings in an empty corner of Abaco; evenings bobbing in the sea on a secluded mooring; the feeling of discovery as you take your dinghy to a deliciously secluded bay in the Exuma Cays.

If you haven’t done it, we can say this, as veterans of many a yacht trip around the Caribbean: it’s one of the ultimate vacations anywhere in the Caribbean. It’s not just a vacation, it’s an adventure — and it’s something you’ll remember forever.

It’s really that good.
