Marriott Is Opening a New Resort in Turks and Caicos

By: Alexander Britell - February 1, 2024

South Caicos is a pristine, beach-filled, untouched eight-square-mile gem in the heart of Turks and Caicos’ “sister islands.” While the island is already home to the popular Sailrock Resort, little South Caicos is about to get a boost from the world’s largest hotel company.

Marriott has announced the sining of the former East Bay Resort in South Caicos, which rebranded to Salterra last summer and will next year become part of the company’s Luxury Collection. The property closed its doors last September to begin what it called a “significant” renovation project, hinting at the time of an imminent brand affiliation that would become the Luxury Collection.

The new Salterra, a Luxury Collection Resort and Spa, Turks and Caicos is slated to open its doors in “early 2025,” according to Marriott.

It will be the first Luxury Collection property in Turks and Caicos, and the second Marriott-portfolio resort in the destination, joining the new Ritz-Carlton, Turks and Caicos in Providenciales.

“Located on one of the most tranquil beaches in the Turks and Caicos Islands, we are looking forward to offering guests the opportunity to reconnect with nature and themselves with the stunning backdrop of South Caicos,” said Michael Tibbetts, CEO of owner JEM Worldwide.

Salterra will debut with 100 guest rooms and suites, ranging from king and queen rooms to large one and two-bedroom suites. The property will also have a handful of three-bedroom “Governor’s Penthouse” suites targeted at families and larger groups.

“Embarking on this extraordinary journey on the island of South Caicos, where luxury blends with the soul of paradise, our new resort isn’t just a destination; it’s a carefully crafted collection of experiences, a harmonious blend of comfort, and a reflection of our dedicated commitment to redefining luxury hospitality,” said Philipp Weghmann, Vice President and Global Brand Leader, The Luxury Collection.

Salterra will have a signature spa, along with six different food and beverage concepts like the Latin-inspired Coba Bar and Grill, a cocktail bar called Sisal and a fine-dining eatery called “Brine.”

The resort will add to Turks and Caicos’ already strong presence in the wider luxury travel market, albeit one that has largely been concentrated in Providenciales.

Saltera’s ownership group has also announced the creation of the South Caicos Coral Reef Consortium, which will include an in-water coral nursery and a land-based coral nursery. It’s part of a wider green focus that will include generating about 50 percent of the property’s energy needs from solar.
