This Century-Old Resort Is Relaunching in The Bahamas

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - December 11, 2023

Nearly a century after it first opened its doors, the historic British Colonial hotel in the heart of downtown Nassau is making its return after a three-year closure.

The nearly 300-room resort, which had been under the Hilton brand prior to its closure, has been undergoing a dramatic renovation project.

When it reopens on Dec. 18, it will do so as an independent hotel.

The lobby, long a centerpiece of the century-old property, has a new look.

The $100 million revamp of the British Colonial by parent company China Construction America has impacted every facet of the hotel, from guest rooms to the pool and beach to the culinary program.

The latter will include seven new dining concepts, from a noodle and sushi bar called Sakana to a signature martini bar, the Woodes Rogers Tavern.

The hotel first opened in 1924.

That’s along with what the property calls a “1920s-era supper club” called Mahogany Club, among other eateries. Unique for its beach in the heart of downtown, the hotel will also have a beachfront bar and grill called Red Pearl.

The rooms are a mix of traditional rooms and suites, with the latter ranging from standard kings to premium ocean view suites, including a “Prime Minister Suite.”

Meeting space will include more than 18,000 square feet of indoor event venues, anchored by the Queen Elizabeth Ballroom.

The return of the British Colonial a big addition to what has been a booming downtown area in Nassau, anchored by the adjacent The Pointe development that includes two Margaitavile-branded resorts: Margaritaville Beach Resort and One Particular Harbour, a residential condo-hotel component.

Nassau Paradise Island has been booming this year, with surging tourism arrivals and a wave of new flights.
