The Dominican Republic is receiving more tourists this year than any other period in its history — in large part because the country is attracting visitors beyond its traditional tourism hub of Punta Cana.

That’s nowhere more true than in the increasingly popular destination of Puerto Plata on the country’s northern coast, where both air and cruise passengers to continue to flock.

Now, another major carrier is ramping up service to the hotspot, with American Airlines planning to double its daily flights between Miami and Puerto Plata next year.

Viva Wyndham V Heavens in Puerto Rico.

Beginning June 4, American will be flying two daily flights between Miami and Puerto Plata, in another boost for the country’s efforts to continue its record-breaking tourism pace.

Puerto Plata is another all-inclusive hub, with large resorts from major brands like Viva Wyndham, Iberostar and Hyatt’s Sunscape brand, among others.

Miami continues to be a dominant source market for Dominican Republic travel. Last month, another route launched between Miami and the Dominican Republic, with SKYHigh’s new route to Punta Cana.
