Major National Honor for Legendary Caribbean Hotelier

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - November 12, 2023

One of the Caribbean’s most legendary hoteliers has received a significant honor from Antigua and Barbuda.

Robert Barrett, the chairman of the Elite Island Resorts hotel group, has been awarded a Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of the Nation, KCN.

The newly-knighted Sir Robert Barrett received the honor during the recent Antigua and Barbuda’s 42nd Anniversary of Independence National Awards Ceremony.

“Your unwavering support and dedication have helped to transform and shape the Antigua and Barbuda tourism product,” said Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez. “Your extensive experience and willingness to offer your expertise has not gone unnoticed.  We recognize and applaud you for your sterling contribution.”

Barrett began his career in the Caribbean in the 1960s, working his way from hotel beach worker to a general manager.

“Mr. Barrett has been a mentor to many hoteliers, myself included, throughout his years within the industry, in Antigua and Barbuda and the wider Caribbean. Many people have been positively impacted by his contributions. He is one who leads by example and is truly a pioneer of Caribbean tourism.”

In the 1980s, Barrett focused his attention on the tourism industry in Antigua and Barbuda and eventually the broader region.

Elite Island Resorts’ portfolio in Antigua includes the Pineapple Beach Club, the St James’ Club, Hammock Cove, Galley Bay and The Verandah.

“Mr. Barrett is one of the savviest tourism marketers that I have met. He constantly stays updated with industry trends and is always open to sharing his extensive knowledge,” said Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority CEO Colin C. James.  “He is readily available and recognized for his willingness to partner with the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority on effective marketing programs.”
