More Flights Between California and the Cayman Islands

By: Alexander Britell - July 30, 2023

California is coming to the Caribbean in a big way, and it’s a trend that’s only getting stronger.

Late last year, Cayman’s national flag carrier, Cayman Airways, made history with its first-ever flights between Los Angeles and Grand Cayman, a route that has helped connect Hollywood and the Cayman Islands.

Now, the route is expanding.

Cayman Airways has announced plans to double service on the LAX-GCM route: the carrier will be operating twice-weekly flights between Grand Cayman’s Owen Roberts International Airport and LAX beginning this fall.

“More details coming soon,” the company said in a statement.

It’s another strong statement about the popularity of the Caribbean on the West Coast, and it points to the area’s growing importance as a source market for Caribbean travel.

Indeed, another west-coast-focused airline, Alaska Airlines, just announced plans to launch its first-ever flights between Los Angeles and Nassau in The Bahamas this fall. (Alaska is also launching flights between Seattle and Nassau in the same period).

That extends to the so-called Mountain West of the United States, where cities like Denver have also become increasingly important, with airlines like Frontier adding more Caribbean routes from the Colorado city. (For its part, Cayman Airways has been operating service from Denver since 2019).

California has always been a small but steady market for the Caribbean, but the area’s large concentration of adventurous travelers, particularly high-income travelers, seems to be focused on the region.

It’s also a nod to the Caribbean’s surging popularity as a destination for the film industry.
