Cancun Has a New Visitor Tax

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - July 27, 2023

Cancun has been one of the hottest travel destinations in the hemisphere since the pandemic, and now the Mexican Caribbean tourism capital is making a major change for visitors.

Effective this month, Cancun is now charging all visitors an $18.80 USD per person tax, required for all non-resident visitors who arrive at Cancun International Airport.

The new tax aims to fund infrastructure improvements in the Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo.

The company has now tapped a Canadian company to facilitate collection of the tax: Travelkore.

All visitors can now pay the tax directly on the Travelkore platform, as visitors cannot pay a cash payment on arrival.

“We’ve built a user-friendly system and with basically one click, the traveller is provided a QR code which is presented upon customs entry at the Cancun airport. Upon departure, the QR code is cancelled” said Tim Scurry, CEO of Travelkore.
