Small Caribbean Hotel of the Week: A Colorful Retreat in Martinique

By: Alexander Britell - July 12, 2023

The French Caribbean island of Martinique has a rather eclectic collection of places to stay, with a focus on smaller, boutique-style getaways.

But even on an island with every kind of hotel, La Suite Villa is, let’s say, a bit different.

You see it the moment you walk through the doors of this boutique hotel in the tourism hub of Trois Ilets, popping with color and energy and a dynamic kind of energy for a small property.

You might call this 15-unit property an “art” hotel, a place where there’s creativity behind just about every detail.

Where is it? Trois Ilets is the tourism capital of Martinique, set just across the Bay of Fort de France from the island’s capital, with a lovely collection of shops, bakeries, eateries, beach bars and hotels. It’s about 45 minutes from Martinique’s Aime Cesaire International Airport.

The hotel has nine villas for larger groups or extra comfort.

What to know? La Suite Villa has five stars, with a mix of six suites and nine villas, all of which have their own private jacuzzis. There is a boutique spa (in collaboration with L’Occitane), There’s a stunning infinity pool, a wine and cigar cellar, a meeting room, room service, and an impressive culinary program including Le Zandoli, an eatery by Chef Luidgi Couteperoumal that is one of the best on the island, and a lovely rhum agricole-focused bar called LSV.

Which room to choose? If you’re with a larger group, the villas are a great option, ranging from one to three bedrooms. For pure indulgence, though, we like the suites, in large part thanks to the ocean views jacuzzis, along with touches like L’Occitane appliances and Nespresso machines. The views are, in a world, spectacular.

What do we like best? This is a hotel for gourmets, those looking to enjoy Martinique’s high level of gastronomic excellence in a sophisticated, avant-garde place oozing with personality. And it’s the food and beverage program, from the irresistible LSV bar to the culinary creativity at Le Zandoli (and the lovely Ti Zandoli) that really set things apart. You won’t find a hotel like this anywhere in Martinique (or, for that matter, the Eastern Caribbean at large).
