Marriott Just Opened Its First Moxy in the Caribbean — A 122-Room, High-Energy Hotel in Tulum

The new Moxy Tulum.

Tulum was a destination that began with small, bohemian beach hotels: think thatched roofs, small staff, hip vibes.

In the last decade, the Mexican Caribbean beach town has exploded — with surging tourism, a brand-new international airport and big hotel companies.

The latter includes Marriott, which had already entered the destination with an Aloft-branded hotel, and is now bringing its popular Moxy brand to the Caribbean hotspot.

The new Moxy Tulum has officially opened its doors, with 122 rooms and a location across the way from Tulum’s National Jaguar Park.

The lush, tropically-designed property has all of the Moxy essentials, from a neon “jaguar” sign to a central lobby bar.

That was the standout when I first stayed in a Moxy hotel last summer in Europe – and it was a welcome, cool vibe — getting a welcome cocktail while you check in isn’t something you typically get at a Marriott.

And that’s precisely what Marriott has brought to Tulum: bold colors, techie-touches in teh rooms like motion-activated lights; a full 24-7 fitness center and keyless entry, too.

The rooms are also unique: Moxy Tulum has a mix of configurations, which includes 55 rooms with double-double rooms and even a slate of twin bunk beds if you’re traveling with kids. The furniture is modular, too.

The bar is actually restaurant, too, with wall art and authentic crafts and some locally-inspired food.

Of course, if you’ve stayed in a Moxy, you know it’s not about staying in the room (or in the hotel, for that matter) — given their small size, they’re really just for sleeping.

But what they are great at is channeling the energy of a destination into their hotel — and creating a gateway for you to be able to get out and explore the destination.

And in that regard, Moxy is a welcome brand to Tulum – one whose youthful spirit is a nod to the kinds of places that first kickstarted Tulum’s tourism — albeit in a modern, big-brand concept.

So what about prices? You can get an entry-level room at the Moxy in Tulum for about $130 per night right now, according to data from Google Hotels.
