If you know Grenada, you know Calabash, the luxury boutique hotel that’s always set a standard for culinary excellence on the island.

The beachfront resort is now upping its game again, with the recent appointment of a new executive chef, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The property has tapped Vancouver native Nicholas Pena Alvarez to the role, in which he will “champion local, seasonal produce,” according to Calabash.

Alvarez has more than two decades of experience including work in several Michelin-starred eateries around Europe.

So what will the new chef be overseeing?

Calabash’s culinary program includes three concepts: the storied Rhodes Restaurant, named for and designed by the late chef Gary Rhodes; The Beach Club, a tapas-and-salad spot right on the sand; and Izakaya, the newest entry to the resort, a Latin-Japanese fusion spot focuses on “small sharing plates.”

“’I am delighted to be joining the team at Calabash,” Alvarez said in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal. “I have long since admired the hotel and its creative approach to gastronomy whilst prioritizing sustainability and look forward to the opportunity to continue to develop this.”

Planning a stay at Calabash? Rates right now are starting at $670 per night, according to the hotel’s Web site.
