US Virgin Islands Tourism Continues to Soar

By: Dana Niland - December 26, 2023

It’s been one of the biggest success stories in the Caribbean since the pandemic, and the US Virgin Islands continues to make major strides in travel and tourism.

International arrivals to the USVI are up 39 percent compared to 2019 levels, while extended-stay visitors are up 25 percent.

Seat capacity from the continental US is up 23 percent in St Croix, and 21 percent in St Thomas.

That’s along with significant performance in the shared economy, with revenues exceeding $343.4 million in 2023.

Hotel occupancy stands at 61.8 percent territory-wide, while average daily rates are $463.23, far higher than the $318.81 regional number.

“The U.S. Virgin Islands has shown resilience and adaptability, even in challenging times. As we enter 2024, we are excited to build on our success and focus on key areas that will further elevate our destination,” said Joseph Boschulte, Commissioner of the US Virgin Islands Department of Tourism.

The territory’s growth has been buoyed by innovative marketing efforts, particularly in the sports tourism field. That includes partnerships with teams and entities ranging from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Jets to Rich Paul’s Klutch Sports Group.

So what’s next?

The USVI says it is continuing to make airlift a priority, particularly adding flights to St Croix out of the United States, Canada and Europe.

On the cruise side, projects show an 80 percent rise through 2024, with nearly 650,000 new passengers forecasted.

That’s along with new pushes in the marine sector and the film industry.

“The U.S. Virgin Islands continues to stand as a destination of choice for travelers seeking natural beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality,” the USVI said in a statement.
