While travel costs continue to rise — particularly flight prices — some destinations are more affordable than others right now.

Globally, travelers are spending an average of more than $7,800 on their trips, according to a new report from travel insurance platform Squaremouth.

Squaremouth said its customers had the highest average trip cost this summer in company history.

The cost of international travel, specifically, is up more than 25 percent from last year.

As travelers seek out affordable travel hotspots, several Caribbean destinations top the list, including Puerto Rico, which was the most affordable Caribbean destination in Squaremouth’s rankings.

The average cost of a Puerto Rico trip for Squaremouth users was $3,907, ahead of Bermuda, the Dominican Republic and The Bahamas.

Jamaica and Aruba also featured in the top 11 most affordable destinations, according to the company.

So what’s fueling Puerto Rico’s low prices? Flight costs, which are substantially lower as a US domestic destination, despite Puerto Rico’s hotel prices, which continue to climb.

The island has continued to see strong tourism performance this summer for precisely that reason, with travelers drawn to cheap flights, cheap vacations and no requirement for a passport to enter.

Squaremouth analytics compared travel insurance policy sales for trips purchased prior to July 10, with travel dates between June 21 and Sept. 23.
