Small Caribbean Hotel of the Week: A Beach Escape in The Bahamas

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - February 27, 2023

There are beaches, and then there is Old Bight Beach.

Here on the southwestern coast of Cat Island in The Bahamas is a nearly five-mile-long stretch of perfect white sand dotted with casuarina trees.

The water is the kind of sparkling turquoise you can only find in The Bahamas.

This is the kind of beach where more than one visitor constitutes a crowd.

But it’s not completely empty.

You see, Old Bight Beach comes with its own private beach retreat: the Rollezz Villas.

This lovely family-owned boutique hotel has just five villas, all right at the edge of the sand, perfect for your dream beach escape.

Where is it? Cat Island is about 136 miles to the southeast of Nassau; you can either fly here directly from Fort Lauderdale on Makers Air or on Bahamasair through Nassau. The hotel itself is about 15 minutes from the New Bight Airport.

Old Bight Beach.

What to Know? There are just five cottage-style villas, all with flat-screen TVs and large fridges, some with one bedroom and others with multiple bedrooms. The location is simply spectacular: it’s just you and the beach, away from the crowds, away from the bustle, the ultimate Crusoe fantasy in the comfort of your own cottage.

Which room to choose? This really depends the size of your traveling party. We like the Turtle House villa, which has three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a full kitchen.

All of the rooms are just steps from the sand.

What do we like best? The feel. This is a classic Out Islands resort, where the husband-and-wife team of Carl and Yvonne Rolle have cultivated a wonderfully friendly beach retreat and an authentically Bahamian experience. But make no mistake, this ethereal beach is very, very hard to leave. If you’re looking for that elusive serenity in an almost otherworldly natural environment, this is the spot.
