Canadian ultra-low-cost carrier Swoop is expanding its service to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The airline is adding a new nonstop route between John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport and Punta Cana, with service set to launch on Jan. 11, 2022.

“As summer comes to an end, residents of southern Ontario are turning their attention towards winter travel planning with their sights set on a sunny getaway,” said Meghan Miller, regional sales lead at Swoop. “We know that Hamiltonians value the convenience of their local airport, and so we’re thrilled to offer more choice of ultra-convenient and ultra-affordable flights to popular sun destinations for winter vacations.”

The new Punta Cana flight will operate once weekly on Wednesdays, according to the carrier.

The move comes as Swoop continues to expand its routes to sun destinations, particularly in the Caribbean.

That includes Cancun, where Swoop says it has also added more weekly flights. Swoop is flying three times each week between Hamilton and Cancun this winter.

“As recovery continues, we are thrilled that Swoop will be expanding its schedule from Hamilton International this winter, offering Canadians even more choice with new routes and increased frequencies to a number of popular destinations,” said Cole Horncastle, Executive Managing Director, John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport.

Swoop says one-way Punta Cana flights will start as low as $199 Canadian dollars.

Punta Cana is the most popular destination in the Dominican Republic, which is itself the most-visited place in the Caribbean.

The Dominican Republic continues to set new tourism records in 2022, on pace for its best year ever.
