Riu Completes Reopening of Caribbean Resorts

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - June 11, 2021

Riu Hotels and Resorts has now completed the reopening of all of its properties in the wider Caribbean-Mexico region.

Luis Riu, CEO of Riu Hotels and Resorts, confirmed the move, with the relaunch of a total of four hotels in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama and Jamaica.

That includes the adults-only Riu Palace Macao in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic; the Riu Tequila in Playa del Carmen on the Caribbean coast of Mexico; the Riu Plaza Panama in Panama City and the Riu Negril in Jamaica.

All of the properties completed their reopening by June 5.

The announcement comes after the recent reopening of Riu’s all-inclusive Riu Palace in The Bahamas last month.

Riu has a total of 42 hotels in the Caribbean Basin-Mexico region, including in Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, The Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Aruba.

The CEO said that the U.S. market had been “working very well.”

“[Americans] never stoped traveling, but ever since the vaccination rate started picking up, a rebound in bookings has been noted,” he said.
