Puerto Rico Air Traffic Continues to Rebound

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - April 14, 2021

Air traffic to Puerto Rico continues to rebound, according to ASUR, the parent company of San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.

Passenger traffic in San Juan was 751,974 in March, which actually represented a 42.9 percent increase compared to March 2020, the onset of the pandemic.

That was buoyed by a 51.9 percent increase in domestic traffic from within the United States.

For the year, San Juan’s air traffic is down just 20 percent compared to the first quarter of 2020, with total passenger traffic of 2,206,510.

The numbers are “reflecting a recovery, when compared to the year-ago period which was significantly impacted by severe downturns in business and leisure travel stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.”

For nearly the entirety of the last year, Puerto Rico had been routing all air traffic through San Juan.

Earlier this month, Puerto Rico reopened airports in Aguadilla and Ponce
