The Bahamas’ Great Harbour Cay Is Getting a New Airport

One of the Bahamas’ most beloved, but still largely undiscovered, destinations is getting a brand-new airport.

Great Harbour Cay, a tiny white-sand paradise in the heart of the country’s Berry Islands archipelago, is the site of a new planned $2 million airport terminal, according to Tourism Minister Dionisio D’Aguilar.

Great Harbour is a popular villa and vacation rental destination and the site of the Carriearl Boutique Hotel.

The “desperately needed” terminal is a priority for the island, the Minister said in his budget speech, given the number of foreign tourists that flow through the airport and the increased activity currently being generated by the nearby Coco Cay cruise destination.

The new building will likely break ground in the next month.

The airport project is part of a wider airport redevelopment push in the Bahamas’ Out Islands, with plans also underway for new terminals in Great Exuma and North Eleuthera, among others.
