Low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines is launching a major Caribbean expansion out of Raleigh-Durham International Airport, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The carrier is launching new nonstop flights to some of the Caribbean’s most popular destinations, including Cancun, Mexico; Montego Bay, Jamaica; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, all out of Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

The Raleigh-Cancun flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays; Raleigh-Montego Bay flights will operate on Mondays and Fridays, while the new Punta Cana flights will run on Mondays and Fridays.

All of the services will launch in mid-November; fares start as low as $39, according to the company.

Frontier is also adding new nonstop flights to Punta Cana from Cincinnati, Cleveland and St Louis, all on a seasonal basis.

“The response from the Raleigh-Durham community to our Low Fares Done Right mission has been tremendous,” said Daniel Shurz, Senior Vice President, Commercial of Frontier Airlines. “With this winter’s schedule, we will offer a great range of sun destinations to customers from the Triangle.”

It’s a big boost for travelers in the south and midwest looking to head to Caribbean shores, as more low-cost carriers enter the Caribbean aviation sector.

Raleigh is the latest city to see a spike in Caribbean flights, as new cities emerge as Caribbean-heavy hubs, from Orlando, where Spirit is significantly increasing its Caribbean operations, to Fort Lauderdale, where airlines from Southwest to JetBlue have tremendously expanded their Caribbean networks.
