St Croix’s New Ice Cream Spot

It’s no secret that I scream for ice cream. So when a friend from the USVI clued me into a new ice cream parlor in Christiansted, St. Croix, I was there, well, lickety split.

Savor St Croix’s Sweets & Treats opened three months ago on Queen Cross Street and sells ice cream from Armstrong’s, a family-run company that’s been making the frozen treat over in the west-coast town of Fredericksted for more than a century.

Armstrong’s is famous for their homemade Caribbean flavors, many of which you can find in the display freezer at Savor St Croix.

There’s pumpkin, almond, mango and banana (which tastes authentic but is curiously colored a pistachio-esque green). But for me, gooseberry, made with the green berries Iocals use to make a sweet-tart “stew,” and which I’ve only ever encountered here, was the only choice.

And it turned out to be good one. Whole gooseberries (which are also known as grosella) were plentiful, lending a fruity tang to the smooth sweetness of the icy confection. And had it not been for their small stone-like seeds, I would have wolfed that cupful of Caribbean heaven down in record time.

Instead I was forced to slow down. Which meant that I could savor each spoonful. And use that time to plot my return to Sweets & Treats the very next day.
