Former United States President Jimmy Carter has cut short a visit to Guyana ahead of the country’s national elections set for Monday, citing a health issue.

The 90-year-old Carter was leading a team of Carter Center electoral observers to the country.

This weekend, he met with current Guyana President Donald Ramotar to talk about electoral preparation ahead of the national vote.

“I’m very happy to have them here, this is the team’s 100th election observation mission,” Ramotar said.

Carter had arrived at Guyana’s Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Friday.

Ramotar said some of the issues raised in the talks were that some parties did not yet have a list of election day staff.

The Carter Center has had a team in Guyana since April. It has observed four elections in the Caribbean country.
