Melia Hotels International’s Paradisus Resorts brand has embarked on a wide-ranging new sustainability push, the company announced.

The all-inclusive brand said it was looking to achieve four objectives: reducing its carbon footprint, decreasing water consumption, minimizing environmental impact and reducing waste.

The company said it was looking to obtain the “strictest environmental certifications,” including Earthcheck Certification.

Among the initiatives the company has already launched are a collaboration with Mexico’s Secretariat of the Environment and Natural Resources to preserve six protected species; a Municipal Ecology Turtle Progrection Programme at its hotel in Cancun and a low-carbon tourism initiative at its property in Playa del Carmen, among others.

Both Paradisus Punta Cana and Paradisus Palma Real in the Dominican Republic have been granted Earthcheck Silver, the company said, and are being assessed to obtain Earthcheck gold certification.
