Dominica is in talks with China on the possibility of building an international airport in the country.

Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has led a three-member team to China to discuss precisely that.

The idea, according to a government statement, would be to build an airport through the “BOOT” system, meaning developers would build, own, operate and then transfer the facility to the Dominican people.

The airport was among several other proposed topics on the agenda for Skerrit in China, according to a government release.

The runway at Dominica’s Melville Hall Airport is not long enough to receive larger planes like 737s and can currently only facilitate travel for intra-Caribbean flights.

It’s not clear where the proposed airport would be located on the island.

Skerrit was joined on the trip by Cabinet Secretary Ambassador Steve Ferrol and Chairman of the AID Bank, Martin Charles.
