Trinidad and Tobago Housing and Urban Development Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal recently hosted a high-level delegation of Chinese officials for talks on infastructure.

The group, which was led by China’s Ambassador to Trinidad, Huang Xingyuan, aimed to enhance cooperation in infrastructure between the two countries, according to a Trinidad government statement.

The Chinese delegation also included Zhang Lei, director of China’s Ministr of Commerce and Michael Zhang of the Shanghai Construction Group International (Caribbean), among others.

The talks, which were held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Port of Spain, extended beyond infrastructure, however.

Moonilal also discussed Trinidad’s stated ambition to position itself as a regional centre for financial services in the Caribbean,” with plans for the establishment of financial centres in both Port of Spain and San Fernando.

Trinidad would seek Chinese financial institutions to help “boost the take-off of these financial centres,” according to Moonilal.
