MIAMI — Jose Toirac and Meira Marrero, a team of artists from Havana, have launched their first major solo exhibition in a United States gallery.

The show, “Vanitas,” is being exhibited at Pan American Art Projects in Miami’s Wynwood neighbourhood.

A collection of sculptures, paintings, installations and videos, “Vanitas” explores the ephemerality of fame, beauty, power, political alliances and wealth.

At the core of the project is a collection of 23 portraits of former First Ladies of Cuba, inspired by a 1952 article in “Vanidades” magazine about Cuba’s first ladies.

Another work, Cara y Cruz, includes 16 paintings: eight are young revolutionaries executed for opposition to former Cuban leader Fulgencio Batista, while the other eight are people executed immediately after the Cuban revolution.
