The OAS and Haiti are also working to facilitate a “major conference” in Washington next year.

The aim of the conference is for Haiti to present its Investment Master Plan to potential foreign investors and international stakeholders, according to the OAS.

The event will take place Jan. 16 at the OAS Headquarters in Washington, and will focus on sectors including tourism, textile manufacturing, infrastructure and other areas, the regional body said in a release.

The news of the conference was revealed following a visit by OAS Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin to Haiti earlier this week.

During his 30-hour stay in Haiti, Ramdin held talks with Haiti President Michel Martelly, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe and Emmanuel Menard, president of the transitional college of the Permanent Electoral Council, which is working to hold elections in the country.

Haiti has officially written to the OAS seeking a mission to assess that electoral process, the OAS said, and Martelly “elaborated on the request” during his meeting with Ramdin.

Ramdin’s talks with Lamothe focused on the idea of holding a forum on best practices on social protection and poverty alleviation strategies.
