Montserrat officially begun drilling for geothermal energy on Sunday, the government announced.

After resolving “a couple of last minute mechanical issues,” the drilling began in Cork Hill on the first of two production wells in Montserrat.

Iceland Drilling Company is doing the drilling work, following a contract signed last year.

Montserrat’s move follows that of Dominica, which also signed a contract with Iceland Drilling in late 2012 and began drilling soon after.

Iceland Drilling has called its first drilling in that country “promising,” according to a company release.

Nevis, too, has been working toward geothermal drilling but the project stalled in 2012.
