PORT-AU-PRINCE — CARICOM Heads of Government have endorsed a proposal by Haiti President and CARICOM Chairman Michel Martelly to work toward holding a US-CARICOM Summit within the next 12 months.

According to the proposal, which was also announced in a communique issued by CARICOM Wednesday, Haiti’s representatives in Washington would work with “all CARICOM Ambassadors accredited to the US” on the feasibility of holding the summit within the next year.

The summit would be likely modeled on similar bilateral fora.

Recent conferences have included the CARICOM-Mexico summit, which was held in Barbados in May 2012 and the UK-Caribbean Summit, which was held in Grenada in January of last year.

US Attorney General Eric Holder was present at this week’s summit in Haiti.
