Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuño Launches New Punta Lima Wind Farm

Puerto Rico has unveiled the Punta Lima wind farm in Naguamo, the second wind farm to be launched in Puerto Rico this year.

The project, which will have 13 turbines, comes with an $82 million investment from energy firm Gestamp. It is currently under construction and has five of 13 mills in place.

“With Punta Lima, we take a step forward toward reducing dependence on oil and the production of our environment,” Fortuño said. “This initiative will result in a more cost-effective long-term energy service for Puerto Ricans.”

The farm is projected to generate 23 megawatts, with 123 jobs created.

“Wind energy not only allows us to produce clean energy, but also allows us to break the chains of dependency on fuel that bind us to fluctuating prices that we do not control,” Fortuño said.

It is the second farm to be announced in Puerto Rico this year, following the unveiling of the Santa Isabel project.

Puerto Rico has set a target of generating 12 percent of its energy by renewable fuels by 2015, with targets of 15 percent and 20 percent for 2020 and 2035, respectively.
