Haiti’s Martelly Postpones Japan Trip

Haiti President Michel Martelly has postponed his official visit to Japan, citing Tropical Storm Isaac, his office announced Friday.

Martelly had been scheduled to visit Japan for a four-day trip beginning on Monday.

In a statement, Martelly said it was “important to be with his people to give [Haiti] all necessary assistance in case of the realization of the threat.”

Haiti’s president had been scheduled to hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and Speaker of the House Takahiro Yokomichi.

Japan has been heavily in involved in relief and recovery efforts since the earthquake of 2010.

Haiti has been on alert for the arrival of Isaac, which was bringing serious winds to Haiti’s capital on Friday.
