Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernandez is unveiling the new Montecristi-Dajabon highway today, built at a cost of more than $7.7 million.

The 34.6km road will link the provinces of Montecristi and Dajabon , and will have two traffic lanes.

It aims to benefit several communities in the country, including Copey, Cañongo y La Carbonera, Castañuelas, Guayubín, Las Matas de Santa Cruz, Pepillo Salcedo and Villa Vásquez.

The government hopes the road will help revitalize the economic activity of farmers in the region, which is near the border with Haiti, both by reducing fuel costs and increasing the transfer of agricultural products.

The project was commissioned by the Ministry of Public Works and built by construction firm Gil+Gil.

It is the latest in a series of infrastructure projects completed in the country.
