Haiti began its national carnival celebration in the city of Les Cayes Sunday.

The celebrations, which followed last week’s fete in Jacmel, included the crowning of a number of carnival kings and queens.

Haitian President Michel Martelly was on hand to distribute the crowns, following an attack on his motorcade during an early carnival-related procession on Friday.

The carnival ceremonies continue through Tuesday in Les Cayes.
