The city of Jacmel is busy preparing for the National Carnival of Jacmel, which will be held on Sunday.

The festivities come two years after Jacmel’s celebrations did not take place in the wake of the earthquake in January 2010.

Jacmel has seen been undergoing a major transformation since the quake, however, positioning itself as one of Haiti’s major tourism centre as the country works to develop into an international destination.

One Miami developer, Michael Capponi, has been helping to redevelop the town, along with the Jacmel Development Group, highlighted by a new boutique hotel project called Le Village de Port-Jacmel, which is slated to complete its first phase this year.

It’s also the site of a project by architect Mark Gilbert, who is helping to redesign Jacmel through a programme of rapid-response housing.
