The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation needs to “deepen the partnership” with member states to help transform education, according to Grenadian Prime Minister Denzil Douglas.

Thomas, who was speaking at the Leaders Forum of the 36th Session of the General Conference of UNESCO in Paris last week, challenged the body to develop an “ethical framework” for a sustainable world, involving the pursuit of economic prosperity, environmental quality and sociopolitical sustainability.

The Prime Minister said that despite the impact of the global downturn, the effort to meet the 2015 Millennium Development Goals has been acknowledged as a positive way to lay foundations for sustainable development.

Part of the strategy, he said, involved increasing attention on climate change.

“This leads to greater awareness and to new ways of thinking, new social and ethical attitudes and innovative responses to our most pressing contemporary challenges,” he said.
