The European Union Council on Tourism on Trade has named Trinidad and Tobago the World’s Best Tourist Destination for 2012, it announced today.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar accepted the award on behalf of the country. According to the Prime Minister, the award was given unanimously. Trinidad joins several other countries, including China, the United Arab Emirates and Syria.

“I thank the council for recognizing what most of us fail to acknowledge and value,” she said. “Trinidad and Tobago is brim-full with tourism potential.”

Persad-Bissessar said that what differentiated Trinidad was its cultural and built heritage, compared to traditional “sun, sea and surf” destinations.
