The Caribbean’s tourism and travel sectors must cooperate to help resolve the constraints faced by air travelers, LIAT CEO Brian Challenger said last week.

The executive was speaking at the inaugural three-day Caribbean Tourism Organisation State of the Industry Conference in St Maarten last week.

There are a number of challenges facing regional travel in the Caribbean, he said, including economic conditions, preferences for extra-regional travel, regulatory barriers and the sheer cost of intra-regional travel.

Challenger said the Caribbean needed to build a more attractive and competitive product — pointing to Caribbean festivals and diverse shopping attractions as potentially marketable.

According to the company, LIAT flies to approximately 120 sectors each day, moving 950,000 passengers annually.
