Danny Heads to Caribbean, Weakens to Tropical Depression

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - August 23, 2015

Storm downgraded

By the Caribbean Journal staff

The storm known as Danny was set to make landfall in the Caribbean early Monday, after being downgraded first from a Hurricane, then to a Tropical Storm and finally, early Monday, to a Tropical Depression.

The center of the storm was expected to pass through the southern Leeward Islands early Monday, although maximum winds had been decreased to just 35 miles per hour.

Danny is still expected to produce 2 to 4 inches of rain over the Leeward Islands, the US and British Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico through Tuesday, the NOAA said in its latest advisory Monday morning.

Despite the weakening, the storm’s approach had led to the cancellation of a number of flights by regional carriers including WINAIR, Seaborne and LIAt, among others.

WINAIR earlier announced the cancellation of all flights on Monday, although it expected to resume normal flights on Tuesday, weather permitting.

LIAT had cancelled a number of flights for Monday and Tuesday, while Seaborne had cancelled seven flights on Monday and one flight on Tuesday.

Tropical storm watches had been discontinued for Guadeloupe, St Barth and St Martin.

The largest international carriers to the region, JetBlue and American Airlines, had not yet made any official statements on the storm or affected flights potentially affected.

On Sunday evening, JetBlue told Caribbean Journal that had not yet been any Caribbean cancellations for Monday.

American Airlines said on social media that its flights to the Caribbean on Monday had not been impacted.

American did say that it would be waiving its one-time ticketing fee for travel changes for certain airports including Antigua, St Kitts, St Thomas, St Croix and St Maarten, subject to restrictions found here.
