American Airlines Launches Miami-Suriname Flights

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - September 9, 2021

American Airlines has officially launched flights to its newest Caribbean destination: Suriname.

The carrier is the first and only U.S. carrier to offer nonstop service to the CARICOM Member State, with five flights each week from Miami to Paramaribo.

American is operating the route on its Airbus A319 aircraft.

“In 2021 we have continued to build on our more than 30-year history in Miami – reaching pre-pandemic levels of flying earlier this year and soon achieving one of our largest schedules in the history of our hub, a true point of pride for our airline and our MIA-based team members,” said Juan Carlos Liscano, Vice President of MIA Hub Operations for American Airlines. “”We are thrilled to launch a new service to Suriname, becoming an important bridge between South Florida and this culturally diverse and emerging ecotourism destination in South America.”

The move comes as American continues to ramp up its Caribbean network out of Miami.

Later this year, American will be launching its first-ever nonstop flights to Dominica and Anguilla out of Miami as well.

“We deeply appreciate American Airlines for their launch of the Miami-Paramaribo route, which re-establishes non-stop service between MIA and the popular Suriname market for the first time since the pandemic began,” said Ralph Cutié, Miami International Airport Interim Director.
