Cancun Continues Tourism Recovery

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - August 6, 2021

Cancun is seeing a continued tourism recovery, according to new data from the destination’s international airport.

Cancun International Airport reported traffic of 2.373 million in July, which represented a 284 percent increase over July 2020.

More importantly, though, it was just 1.1 percent lower than the same period in 2019, marking a nearly complete recovery.

For the year to date, Cancun’s traffic is up 73 percent over the first seven months of 2021, and down about 24 percent from the first seven months of 2019, according to ASUR, which manages the airport.

The numbers reflect “continued recovery in travel demand in general and the rollout of vaccination campaigns in the US and gradual advances in Mexico,” according to a statement from ASUR, which manages nine airports in Mexico.

ASUR also manages Cozumel airport, which actually eclipsed its 2019 numbers in July, with 67,126 passengers last month — a 39.4 percent jump over July 2019.
