Antigua Could Liberalize Telecom Sector

The Antiguan government is embarking on a series of programmes aimed at liberalizing the telecommunications sector in the country in 2012.

“We really need to sit down, government, APUA and the telecoms division and really chart a proper course going forward,” said Prime Minister Dr Baldwin Spencer. “Should APUA be involved and to what extent now that the markets have been opened up?”

Spencer questioned the continued viability of the sector.

“How are we going to ensure that government continues to receive revenue from this sector, as we would have been receiving some revenue under the arrangement with LIME. How are we going to ensure that the interest of the people of Antigua and Barbuda is protected?”
