Tropic Ocean Airways Proposing Pre-Testing for Bahamas Flights

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - October 11, 2020

Air carrier Tropic Ocean Airways is working with the Bahamian government to offer preflight COVID-19 antigen testing onsite in Fort Lauderdale and Miami prior to departure to The Bahamas, the company said this week.

Testing would be offered at Fort Lauderdale International Airport’s Sheltair facility and the Miami Seaplane Base.

In addition to offering immigration pre-clearance, this system would help facilitate travel to all islands of The Bahamas by reducing additional touchpoints and possible congestion at ports of entry, and removing the logistical challenges of testing upon arrival, the company said.

The proposal comes ahead of The Bahamas’ new travel protocols, which are set to launch Nov. 1.

One of Tropic Airways’ testing partners, Genome LLC, has offered to offset costs to travelers by providing a package deal including the COVID-19 PCR swab test and Ag Antigen test.

The Ag Antigen test kids have the required 95 percent specificity and sensitivity.

The government recently announced that the 14-day mandatory “vacation in place” quarantine requirement would expire on October 31.
