Revenue at the Kingston Container Terminal has doubled from just under $70 million to approximately $140 million since 2004, according to a report by Dr Alwin Hales, Permanent Secretary in Jamaica’s Ministry of Transport and Works.

“[The port] is a major player in the transshipment market,” he said “The terminal has maintained its commanding position in the region through sustained efforts and marketing.”

Hales said the Ministry was positioning the port of Kingston to become the primary transshipment location in the region after the expansion of the Panama Canal.

Over the last seven years, expansion at the port has increased capacity from 400,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) to the current 2.8 million.

The first expansion at the port came in 1995 to 1997, and the second project took place between 2005 and 2008.
