Is This Jamaica’s Next Tourism Mecca?

By: - April 1st, 2017

Jamaica has big plans for the north-coast city of Falmouth, according to Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

Jamaica’s government intends to put a major focus on the development of the town, home to a Royal Caribbean cruise port and perhaps the country’s best-restored historic town.

“The town has so much history; the architecture is there, the people are there who are friendly and welcoming,” he said, noting that there are matters relating to public order, cleanliness, and organization that must be addressed,” Holness said. “I want it to be known publicly that I will be taking a personal interest in ensuring that Falmouth town itself is given the attention it deserves.”

While the city is getting a boost thanks to the nearby launch of a new Excellence all-inclusive resort project, the plan, Holness said, is for a focus on experiential tourism.

That will mean a push to emphasize Falmouth’s colonial history, from the stunning historic courthouse (pictured at top) to its famous Jewish cemetery.

For those looking to experience the town before its transformation, while there are some larger resorts nearby (like Royalton’s White Sands and Blue Waters resorts), there are also 95 Falmouth listings on Airbnb.
