Caribbean Hotel Occupancy Declines Again

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - December 21, 2016

Caribbean hotel occupancy continues to fall in 2016, according to the latest report from data and analytics specialist STR.

Regional hotel occupancy fell 2.8 percent in November compared to the same month in 2015, with occupancy for the year now down 2.2 percent to 66.9 percent.

Hotel occupancy has seen year-over-year monthly declines in 10 of 11 months this year.

Average daily rates dropped by 2.7 percent in November to $168.66, while Revenue per available room, RevPar, fell 5.5 percent to $109.52.

It’s been a challenging year for the region’s hotels, from the Zika issue to increased competition from home booking sites like Airbnb and HomeAway and rising travel to Cuba.

STR’s data surveyed 1,927 hotels comprising 241,014 rooms in the wider Caribbean region (not including Cuba).
