This Caribbean Island Wants to Be a “Blue Growth” Leader

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - August 28, 2016

It’s called Blue Growth: it means a strategy aimed at supporting sustainable growth concentrated in the marine and maritime sectors.

And one Caribbean island wants to be a regional leader in this area: Grenada.

The tri-island country has been making a big push to draw attention to Blue Growth, from a strategy meeting in March 2015 to the first-ever Regional Blue Week and Investment Conference in May.

Grenada is also looking to develop a “Blue Growth Master Plan,” which presents a vision of possible initiatives and interventions in the fields of Coral Restoration, the Marine and Yachting Sector, Ecotourism and Fisheries .

Additionally, Grenada is looking to help cultivate new technologies such as Fish Aggregating Devices, as well as other ways to help fishermen, such as the installation of iceboxes on fishing boats in rural communities and in the area of sea moss cultivation.

The ultimate plan, the government says, is to become a global exemplar for Blue Growth, something that could help the country “increase its natural capital, attract new investment, grow jobs and make existing businesses in the sub-sectors more profitable.”
