San Juan Launches “Ruta de la Salsa”

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - July 20, 2016

Salsa and Puerto Rico — they’re practically inextricably tied.

And now, thanks to a surge in tourist interest, the island has officially launched a new “Ruta de la Salsa,” or Salsa Route, on the island.

The route aims to provide a look at the history, culture and influence of the musical medium on Puerto Rico and the World.

The route was designed by tour guide Clemente de Freitas, aiming to satisfy both locals and international tourists who love salsa.

“This route is the answer to the interest of the large number of visitors and salsa lovers, who come to Puerto Rico looking for information about the roots, history and trajectory of the proponents of this genre that so much glory have given to the Island,” said Ingrid Rivera Rocafort, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Some of the sites range from La Placita de Santurce to Calle Cerra, home to Puerto Rico’s most famous salsa record shop.
