Jamaican Bobsled Team Looking to 2018 Olympics

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - July 8, 2016

The Jamaican Bobsled Teams is looking to Pyeongchang.

The country’s men’s and women’s bobsled teams are beginning to prepare for qualifying for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, and they will soon have new sleds.

Japanese manufacturers have announced the donation of three new sleds for the Jamaican bobsled team, following a ceremony at the residence of Japanese Ambassador to Jamaica Masanori Nakano.

“They are accustomed to barely making it because of the lack of resources and funding and they have still astonished the world,” said Jamaican Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia Grange. “So, can you imagine when they get their own brand-new equipment?”

“With Japanese craftsmanship and technology, and the Jamaica Bobsleigh brand, it will be ‘cool runnings’ every time the Jamaica Shitamachi sled touches ice… we are going to be burning on the ice,” she said.

The Jamaican Bobsled Team made its debut at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, inspiring the popular film “Cool Runnings.”

The team most recently qualified for the 2014 Sochi Olympics in Russia thanks to the leadership of veteran Winston Watts.
