Rum Journal: A Caribbean Overwater Bungalow Bar

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - November 12, 2015

You may be familiar with the overwater bungalow, one of the great fantasies of travelers the world over, though usually found in Polynesia — not in the Caribbean.

That’s where one clever hotel in Martinique has you covered.

One of the longtime institutions of the Hotel Bakoua in Martinique’s tourism hub of Trois Ilets is the Coco Bar, something we like to call an overwater bungalow bar.

It’s set on stilts in the turquoise waters of Trois Ilets, meaning you can watch fish swimming along as you sip a ti’ punch or a sweet, delicious planteur (the French Caribbean’s version of the rum punch).

There’s even a selection of snacks and sandwiches that the French seem to do better than anyone (think poulet boucane on a baguette).

But this bar is really all about the feeling of floating above the sea, watching the city of Fort de France across the bay and reaching for your next rhum vieux, sec.

Cheers!
