SAN JUAN — In English they’re popsicles; in Spanish they’re paletas. But in any language, the frozen novelties from Puerto Rico’s Senor Paletas taste just as sweet.

Opened in January, the tiny Old San Juan storefront is dominated by a display case filled to the brim with frosty treats arranged in neat rows like obedient soldiers.

Take your pick from 15 flavors, all natural and made daily, sin conservantes, on the premises.

Coconut is the bestseller but mojito – made with local lime and mint but, alas, no alcohol — is close behind. There’s sugar-free mango for the calorie counters; Ferrero Rocher and Nutella flavors for the hazelnut lovers; and strawberry-and-mango for people (like me) who want to mix it up.

Puerto Rico’s first popsicle purveyor sells about 100 a day, a figure we can only expect to climb with summer temps.

Senor Paleta is at 153 Calle Tetuan and opens every day except Monday, from 10:30am to 8:30pm. Cash only.
